Hangovers: The process of recovery

hangover

That brutal morning of regret when it was all so hilarious the night before. Hangovers are a mixture of dehydration and symptoms often induced by pressure on the liver - headaches, nausea, exhaustion and low mood.

As alcohol is broken down, potentially harmful by-products are produced. The body will enter emergency mode, directing nutrients normally used for digestion and energy production to help the liver flush the alcohol and toxins through its detoxification process. With these essential nutrients less focused on their normal functions, the body may feel worse in the process.

We all know that hydration is key, especially in the morning after a boozy night. Water is the best thing to rehydrate with, but the body often craves something sweeter and a little more substantial.

Diluting fruit juices or coconut water is a great way to curb that sweet craving, whilst also flooding the body with electrolytes and vitamins. Kombucha is also a brilliant way to settle a hangover stomach, as it's full of probiotics, which will help rebalance the intestinal flora and support the liver in flushing out remaining impurities.

Healthy breakfast

The meal composition of our breakfast is vital to help balance blood sugar levels and prevent any further energy dips or mood swings throughout the day. Unfortunately, a slice of toast and jam or a pastry won’t make the grade. Protein is an important macronutrient the body needs to help it recover, as it contains the amino acids to support the liver in its detoxification process.

Protein + Carbohydrate

1-2 slices of smoked salmon + 110g berries

2 eggs + 1-2 slices of dark rye or pumpernickel bread

3 slices of turkey breast + 3 oatcakes or rye crackers

120g live yoghurt + 40g muesli or low-sugar granola

A small handful of nuts/seeds + 40g porridge oats

2-3 tablespoons of nut butter + 2-3 almond flour pancakes

Rather than fantasising over a fry-up or last night’s takeaway, a balanced combination of protein and complex carbohydrates is the way to go. If there’s not enough time for a proper breakfast, or if you don’t have the energy to make a balanced breakfast, a nutrient-dense smoothie using rough measurements is a great option.
